Dissolution of Platinum in the Operational Range of Fuel Cells
One of the most important practical issues in low-temperature fuel-cell catalyst degradation is platinum dissolution. According to the literature, it initiates at 0.6-0.9 VRHE, whereas previous time- and potential-resolved inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) experiments, however, revealed dissolution onset at only 1.05 VRHE. In this manuscript, the apparent discrepancy is addr...
متن کاملInfluence of platinum group metal-free catalyst synthesis on microbial fuel cell performance
Platinum group metal-free (PGM-free) ORR catalysts from the Fe-N-C family were synthesized using sacrificial support method (SSM) technique. Six experimental steps were used during the synthesis: 1) mixing the precursor, the metal salt, and the silica template; 2) first pyrolysis in hydrogen rich atmosphere; 3) ball milling; 4) etching the silica template using harsh acids environment; 5) the s...
متن کاملDesign of ordered-catalyst layers for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell cathodes
In polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), because the reaction rate in the cathode is slower than that in the anode, the cathode catalyst layers require more catalyst loading than the anodes [1]. Much research has been focused on improving the catalytic activity in cathodes and simultaneously reducing the amount of Pt supported by carbon black, which is the most commonly used cathode...
متن کاملEffects of Sample Preparation Technique on Quantitative Analysis of Automotive Fuel Cell Catalyst Layers
Environmental concerns about carbon emissions are motivating development of Proton-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEM-FC) technology for automotive propulsion. Catalyst Coated Membranes (CCM), which are the electrochemical „heart‟ of PEM-FC, consist of a proton-conductive polymer membrane embedded between two porous, electron conductive electrodes. The catalyst in the cathode consists of Pt nanop...
متن کاملFormation of Platinum Catalyst on Carbon Black Using an In-Liquid Plasma Method for Fuel Cells
Platinum (Pt) catalyst was formed on the surface of carbon black using an in-liquid plasma method. The formed Pt catalyst showed the average particle size of 4.1 nm. This Pt catalyst was applied to a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). The PEMFC showed an open voltage of 0.85 V and a maximum output power density of 216 mW/cm2.
